Losing Weight Fast: How Fast is Too Fast?

When I was in my late teens, I was a boxer.  I had a fight coming up, and my coach told me I needed to lose weight fast, about 7 pounds in just over a week, to qualify for the Friday night fight he had lined up for me.

So, I put myself on the ultimate fast weight loss diet.  In fact, I may have invented a new weight loss system.  I ran about 5 miles a day and ate nothing but egg whites and salads for 6 days.  I lost 9 pounds, and this was before the days of fat burners and effective weight loss supplements.  But, I felt like crap.

The day before the fight, I was training and passed out.  I woke up vomiting and couldn’t stand on my own.  My coach called my parents, and they took me to the hospital.

When I told the doctor about my diet, he said my body was in a form of shock.  My metabolism took a nose dive, and the best thing I could do was to rest and gradually up my caloric intake over the next few days.

My fight would have to be cancelled.

Both I and my coach learned something from that experience.  My coach, who taught math at a local college by day, did some research.  He concluded that losing more than 5 pounds in a week does extensive damage to your body, and might even hamper further attempts to lose weight in the future.

So when you hear me talking on this site about losing weight fast, I’m not talking about dropping 15 pounds in a week.  That’s insanity, and it does absolutely nothing good for your body.  What it does do, is it decreases your metabolism, causing you to feel sluggish and faint.

Not only that, but it’s counterproductive.  Within a month after passing out, I had gained my 9 pounds back, plus about 5 more.  In 2 months, I was 20 pounds heavier than I was before I lost the original weight!  I could not stop eating.

I later learned that my body had kicked into survival mode, and that most of the original weight I had lost was muscle, not fat.  It took a whole year to get my body back in balance.

Yes, some of those crazy diets will cause you to lose weight quickly, even 15 pounds a week, but trust me, you really don’t want that.
